Mothers Day Gifts and How Flowers Make Them Perfect

Mothers Day Gifts throughout History

Celebrating Mothers Day is a long and honorable tradition that has been enjoyed around the world for many years. The general idea is to celebrate and give thanks to the love and dedication that our mothers have shown us by presenting them with personal Mothers Day gifts. This tradition has become especially important over the past hundred years, with great emphasis now placed upon it.

Different countries give Mothers Day gifts on various days of the year because the holiday has a number of varying origins. One school of thought believes this day emerged from a custom of mother worship in ancient Greece. A sort of mother’s day, which involved a festival to Cybele the great mother of Greek gods and the wife of Cronus, took place around the Vernal Equinox in the Mediterranean.

Mothers Day Gifts and the Modernization of the Tradition

In the United States, the holiday was inspired by the existing British Holiday. It was imported by social activist Julia Ward Howe after the end of the American Civil War. It originally served a different purpose, however, and was intended to unite women against warfare. This was soon exchanged for Mothers Day as we know it, with gifts playing a large part in the ceremony.

In 1870, Julia Howe created the Mothers Day Proclamation as a call for peace and disarmament. Howe failed in her attempt to gain formal recognition of a Mothers Day for Peace. Her idea was originally influenced by one Ann Jarvis, who, starting in 1858, attempted to improve sanitation through utilization of “Mothers Work Days.”

Upon her death in 1904, her daughter started a crusade to found a memorial day for women. The first holiday was celebrated in Grafton, West Virginia on May 10 of 1908 in the church where Ann Jarvis had once taught Sunday school. The holiday was declared officially by some states beginning in 1912. In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson declared the first national Mothers Day, and the tradition of giving gifts was soon to follow.

Nine years after the first official holiday was celebrated, commercialization had become so intensive that Ann Jarvis’ daughter became a major opponent of what the holiday had become. To this day, it is one of the most commercially successful holidays in the country, with Mothers Day gifts generating considerable revenue for numerous industries.

Creative Floral Mothers Day Gifts

One of the industries to benefit the most from the popular appeal of Mothers Day Gifts was the floral one, which became a pivotal component of the event due to the historical popularity and appropriate nature of flowers. Over the past decades much research has gone into determining what the most effective Mothers Day gifts are, and almost all results point back to flowers.

When trying to decide which Mothers Day gifts you are going to buy, the following floral designs may be the perfect choice for your needs:

· Bouquets – This is perhaps the most traditional standard when it comes to Mothers Day gifts. A bouquet of flowers has the advantage of being one of the oldest forms of gift in the world and enjoys a universal appeal that is hard to deny. If you want something more creative, try mixing these traditional blooms with tropical flowers. Wildflowers are also a great choice for Mothers Day gifts, especially if your mother has a rural personality.
